Boho Strings performs Schnittke, Pärt and Shostakovich.
The late Shostakovich was overwhelmed by three great masterpieces: Mussorgsky’s Songs and Dances of Death, Mahler’s Das Lied von der Erde and Britten’s War Requiem. In the Fourteenth Symphony, he allows all three to flow together in an impressive song symphony for strings, soprano and bass. With soloists Tineke Van Ingelgem and Rubén Amoretti.
The Fourteenth Symphony is one long, tormented reflection on death. Two in memoriams pave the way for this masterpiece: Schnittke mourns for his countryman, Pärt muses on Britten, to whom Shostakovich dedicated his symphony, by the way.
Alfred Schnittke: Prelude in memoriam Dmitri Shostakovich
Arvo Pärt: Cantus in memoriam Benjamin Britten
Dmitri Shostakovich: Symphony no. 14 op. 135
