Rule, Britannia (Bewailing Brexit)

April 29 @ 8:30 pm - 10:00 pm

In defiance of stereotypical British reservation, English music has been uninhibited since time immemorial, unrestrainedly expressive, and nostalgic for a past that no longer exists (and perhaps never has); however idyllic, there is always something dark and deep between the notes.
When, in a few years’ time, the spectre of Brexit is raised, and England regains the “splendid isolation” it has cherished since the early Middle Ages, the melancholy and nostalgia that British music has always had will become a living thing. Until then, and for a long time to come, this program will treat you to music that is carefree and glowingly melancholic, with works by Elgar, Finzi, Stanford and Holst.

With Roeland Hendrikx, clarinet
